13 Jun Five Survival Tips for Your First Tucson Summer
Even if you have lived in hot climates before, you might not realize that Arizona’s dry summer heat can be brutal, especially if you don’t have adequate cooling in your home or you spend a lot of time outside. At Temco Air Environmental, we work hard to keep our clients’ air conditioning and cooling systems running smoothly all summer long. Take a look at our top five survival tips for your first Tucson summer, and give us a call if you need air conditioning repair.
- Get Outdoors in the Early Mornings or When the Sun Goes Down
During the summer, the hottest period of the day is between 2 pm and 5 pm. If you want to get some exercise or take your dog for a walk, the best time to do it is in the very early mornings or after the sun goes down. While it might already be pretty warm outside at 8 am, the pavement won’t be as hot yet, so your dog’s feet won’t be in danger of burning. Plus, you’ll be less likely to suffer from dehydration if you take a quick stroll around your neighborhood or local park at 6 or 7 pm.
- Stay Hydrated and Stay in the Shade
If you do have to spend time outside in the summer heat, make sure to stay hydrated. You should drink at least 24-32 ounces of water for every hour you’re out in the sun, especially if you’re moving around or exercising. Protect yourself from sunburns and skin cancer by wearing SPF 30 and reapplying it every 45 minutes. Wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing and sunglasses and a hat if possible. Try to stay out of direct sunlight and spend some time in the shade instead.
- Know Where the Pools Are
If you don’t have a pool yourself, you can take advantage of friends’ pools or public pools. Find out where the closest ones are, when they are open, and if there is a fee to use them. Remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.
- Find Air Conditioned Places for Fun With Family and Friends
If you want to get out of the house but don’t want to risk feeling like you’re melting into the pavement, find some fun activities you and your family or friends can enjoy in the air conditioning. Go to a movie, window shop at the mall, get ice cream, visit a museum, or play games at Golf N’ Stuff or Dave & Busters.
- Make Sure Your Cooling System Is Prepared
Finally, make sure your home’s cooling system is prepared for the Tucson summer heat. Schedule a tune-up in May and ask your HVAC contractor or technician to make sure your system can handle a major increase in usage. Consider installing a smart thermostat, and keep your AC set to 78° when you’re sleeping or out of your home and 75° when you’re home. If you’re having any trouble with your cooling system, call us at Temco Air Environmental. We offer fast, reliable air conditioning repair throughout Tucson, AZ.
